If you've priced a new air conditioner or heat pump lately, you've probably heard the terms A2L, R-454B or R-32. Here's what changed, why it changed, and what it means for the system in your home today.

What Are A2L Refrigerants?

A2L refrigerants are a class of lower-toxicity, mildly flammable refrigerants with a much lower global warming potential (GWP) than R-410A. The name comes from the ASHRAE safety rating: "A" means lower toxicity and "2L" means lower flammability. R-454B and R-32 are the two A2L refrigerants used in most new central air conditioners, heat pumps and mini-splits.

Why New Systems Changed Refrigerants

Under the federal AIM Act, the EPA is phasing down HFC refrigerants with a high global warming potential. Its Technology Transitions rule requires new residential and light commercial air conditioners and heat pumps manufactured from January 1, 2025 to use a refrigerant with a GWP below 700. R-410A, the standard refrigerant for the past two decades, has a GWP of about 2,088. R-454B comes in around 466 and R-32 around 675, so manufacturers redesigned their equipment around them.

RefrigerantSafety classGWP (approx.)Where you'll find it
R-22A11,810Older systems; no longer produced since 2020
R-410AA12,088Most systems installed before 2025
R-454BA2L466Many new central air conditioners and heat pumps
R-32A2L675Many new ductless mini-splits and some central systems

If You Have an R-410A System Today

You don't need to replace a working R-410A system. It's still legal to run and repair, and R-410A is still available for service. Because production is being phased down, though, the refrigerant is likely to keep getting more expensive, which makes leaks costlier to fix. A2L refrigerants are not a drop-in replacement: an R-410A system can't be converted by swapping refrigerants. Keeping your current system well maintained and leak-free is the best way to get the most years out of it. If your system still uses R-22, which hasn't been produced since 2020, repairs that involve refrigerant are already hard to justify.

If You're Replacing Your AC or Heat Pump

New A2L systems are designed as matched sets, so the outdoor unit and the indoor coil or air handler are replaced together rather than mixing old and new parts. Many new indoor units also include a refrigerant leak detection sensor, and A2L equipment has to be installed and serviced to the manufacturer's requirements. We take part in ongoing training programs and can walk you through the options for air conditioner installation, heat pump installation and ductless mini-split installation with the new refrigerants.

Other Changes Worth Knowing

New Department of Energy efficiency standards, measured in SEER2 and HSPF2, raised the minimum efficiency of new air conditioners and heat pumps, which helps lower energy costs over the life of the system. Smart thermostats and air quality monitoring have also become common, and many of them can be added to an existing system for more control over your comfort and efficiency.
